Review: "Gathering Darkness" by Morgan Rhodes

Onto the next book review! As always, spoiler warning as I will be reviewing the third installment in a series of books. Let's begin with the summary of Rhodes' book and get under way because I can't wait to discuss with the next exciting installment of The Falling Kingdoms series.

War brought them together. Love will tear them apart. Alliances from across Mytica and beyond as royals and rebels alike race to hunt down the Kindnred--the four elemental crystals that give their owners god-like power. The stakes have never been hight for Magnus and Cleo, who are brought together by a life or death decision that will lock their fates and change the course of the kingdom forever. The Rebels forge ahead. Pricness Cleo slays with sweetness--and a secret that might control Lucia's magic--as she and vengeful Jonas lead the hunt for the all-powerful Kindred. The Kraeshians join the fray. Asur and Amara, the royal siblings from the vast kingdom across the Silver Sea, prove to unveil the Kindred. And which side will Prince Magnus choose, now that everyone he's been betrayed by everyone he's ever loved?

Comparably my experience reading the previous book Rebel Springs, had left me wanting only because of the recurring appearances of the same plot points being stated throughout the story. I'm happy to report this recurrence did not occur again through Gathering Darkness. I'm going to get right to it, in an effort to contain my excitement, that this has been my favorite of all the books in The Falling Kingdoms series.

Personal favorites Cleo and Magnus keep me entranced, third favorite rebel leader Jonas keeps me swooning and Lucia develops a fascinating dark side. Rebel Springs had left me mesmerized with the pressure on forming alliances and the thrills of its twists and turns, Gathering Darkness however has definitely surpassed its predecessor in intensity. From cover to cover, the book is a thrill ride where our four main protagonists are forced to test alliances, reassess their trust in one another and remind themselves that time is running out. I flew through this book pretty quickly and thoroughly enjoyed the ride.

Perhaps my favorite aspect of this book is how much of our questions were answered while some may still be shrouded in mystery. The stakes are definitely higher and I honestly cannot wait until I reach the next book in this series. Rhodes delivers on yet another book and will definitely have me rushing to my nearest bookstore to pick up the next book in this wonderful series!
